Motorcycles I have owned (long)

I was born in the early 60's, so you do the math. If you want to call be a boomer, I truly do not care. Please forgive me if I get a date wrong, I'm going from memory.I learned to ride when I was 10, on a uncle's 1968-ish Honda 125 while spending some of the summer at my grandparent's farm. A year later, we moved to the suburbs, and there was a good place for me to ride close by. So my dad stepped up!1973: 1973 Yamaha 125 Enduro (an AT3 for you experts). It was a nice bike, but got stolen about 60 days after we got it.1974: 1974 Yamaha DT100. I rode the piss out of this little bike for almost four years, and it was a real trooper. Big hills, big jumps, and a few big wipeouts. It eventually got ignition problems and was sold (cheaply) to an acquaintance that wanted to try to fix it.1978: 1973 Husqvarna 125CR. Just because I was a teenager that read Dirt Bike and Motocross Action all the time, and thought that Husky's were just too cool! Had a couple of years of fun with it, but I sorta got too big for a 125. It was noisy.1979: 1976 Kawasaki KZ400. A street bike, with my own money! It was my personal transportation for my senior year of high school, including my after-school job. Rode it all winter, too. Took it to my first duty station in the service in 1981. It was a great motorcycle; simple and reliable. Had a few small drops on the street over the years, and once got clobbered at an intersection by another motorcycle. Rode it constantly until I had steady work and the means to finance my first car. Traded it in when I bought...1984: 1984 Honda XL350. A fine dual sporter, heavy. Taught me how to kickstart a big thumper. Sold in 1989.1984 Husqvarna 400 Enduro. At the time, Huskies owned the woods (think Dick Burleson!). A very capable bike, I rode it in one national enduro, which was very effective for teaching me the value of BenGay. After less than a year of ownership, it spun out it's water pump while out on a trail ride, causing the motor to overheat horrendously. It was almost given away to a riding buddy who did eventually fix it.1995: 1990 Kawasaki KLR650. Yes, I was bikeless for a few years; life intervenes. This bike was a beater that was acquired cheaply; I spent some time fixing it up and had more fun doing that than riding it. I commuted with it during the warmer months. Sold in 1999 to make room in the garage for...1999: 1999 Kawasaki ZXR1100. The Universal Japanese motorcycle (UJM). A fine steed, although heavy and it vibrated too much. Commuted with it a bunch. Traded in 2001 for bike number 10 below.2000: 1998 Kawasaki ZX7R. Bought with the sole intention of turning it into a race/trackday bike. I followed through and put a bunch of Muzzy parts on it and a full set of Sharkskinz. I went to the Keith Code school and started racing with no success whatsoever! I did dozens of trackdays with this bike over the next 5 years and had some really good times. One nasty crash, but no damage to me besides a sore shoulder and a headache. Parted out in 2007.2001: Aprilia RSV Mille. Flat Black and neon red. It was sexy! I commuted on it and learned that superbikes make crappy commuters. I posed with it quite a bit at local motorcycle get-togethers, which it was very good at. Sold in 2003.2003: 2003 BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replica. A real hoot just to look at it. I added the smaller bags and commuted on quite a bit, which it was quite good at. But... the BMW styling went sort of smooth after awhile, and the bike gave me no fizz. Sold in 2004.2004: Honda CRF450F. Bought to convert it to a Supermoto, which I did. Raced it once and got a third place trophy! Then the supermoto craze quickly faded, and that was that. I converted it back to a motocross bike, and took it to the track a couple of times. I have it to this day, still ride it, and hope to be able to keep doing so!2004: Ducati Supersport 1000. If you're not familiar with these, they were the 900SS bored out and given a slightly upgraded dashboard. This is/was a truly great motorcycle. Didn't have much top speed (135ish), but handled beautifully. Commuted on it some, did one trackday with it when the ZX7 was laid up for some reason. Dual exhaust, so I put a pair of Arrow cans on it (Termis were much too expensive!) and no motorcycle ever sounded better. Let me say again, no motorcycle ever sounded better. Sold in 2006, because life intervened again, and I needed the money for a new furnance. Really. Also, trackdays took away the enthusiasm I once had for street riding.2005: 2004 Ducati 749S. My next trackday bike. Converted with full bodywork, full Akrapovic exhaust, and a slipper clutch. The bike was tremendous fun to ride fast, and I did trackdays on it regularly. One day, on the front straight at VIR, the motor disintegrated (the bike had only 2400 miles on it). It took awhile and a substantial sum of money to reengine the beast, but the bloom was off the rose and life was intervening again anyway. After one more trackday, I parked it and eventually sold it in 2008.2019: 2014 Beta Evo 300. Life intervened in a good way: I retired! Plus, I always wanted a trials bike anyway. I ride it everyday in my backyard obstacle course; I abuse it quite badly, but it takes it and comes back for more! I've done a couple of events, and had great fun. Two years ago, I had never heard of Beta motorcycles; now, I'd recommend them to anybody.2020: 2018 Kawasaki KLX140. Recently acquired to help the teenagers in the family cope with quarantine boredom. And I figured it was time I gave something back by teaching some people to ride!I've been blessed with good health and being able to have these nice things in my life! I wish as much for all my motorcycling friends. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gkm7ty/motorcycles_i_have_owned_long/?utm_source=ifttt

Nothing better then looking at your just cleaned bike. Sorry for the bad editing.

I passed my restricted test!

I got a call saying I'm 5 minutes late because I had the wrong time in my calendar, he let me be 30 minutes late and still do the test and was totally professional surrounding the fact he knew I'd feel rushed.I'll probably email his company and commend him (maybe without the part where I was late, as in theory they could be annoyed they didn't get to charge a re-sitting fee but I doubt it, just don't want it to backfire on him).It really helped me because it cemented the things I was doing as 'right' and I was given detailed feedback on the things I need to work on. Now I'm not constantly second guessing my choices.Man, I'm so glad to be a part of this community because anytime I interact with another rider its just such a positive experience. I suffer from C-PTSD so any encounter, regardless of context, feels hostile to me, and the fact I keep having great experiences with other riders is helping me - but everything about riding is actual therapy, I swear.I can now remove the L plate! And it starts the 12 month countdown before I am on my full license. Once I'm on my full license my motorcycle choices are no longer restricted, nor are the hours I can ride, and I'll be allowed to take pillion passengers and tow other motorcycles (two things I never want to do). via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gk0y61/i_passed_my_restricted_test/?utm_source=ifttt

Had a surprise day off work, decided to take the DRZ400SM from Sacramento to San Francisco and back. Here is a little clip from one of my favorite parts of the trip.

Adjusting Tension vs Replacing Chain

I’m a bit of a novice trying to learn basic DIY maintenance, and have realized I’ve been neglecting regular chain care and inspections. Looking at descriptions of a bad chain that needs to be replaced (e.g. side to side movement, the ability to pull the chain away from the rear sprocket enough to see a gap, etc) it looks like the same issues that would arise if you just need to adjust the chain tension. How do I know if I need to do a simple adjustment vs replacing the chain entirely? via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gjfr2w/adjusting_tension_vs_replacing_chain/?utm_source=ifttt

Who has ceramic coated or otherwise protected a matte/satin finish or wrapped bike?

I'm looking for any insight the r/motorcycles community has on ceramic coating a matte finish or matte wrapped bike. Just finished reassembling my 2013 FZ8 as I needed something a little fresh after 6 years.I know some people think it's all snake oil, but if there is anyone who has experience it would be greatly appreciated.Bike in question, maybe not for your taste, but I'm pumped. https://imgur.com/j9RBEPp via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gjf2ag/who_has_ceramic_coated_or_otherwise_protected_a/?utm_source=ifttt

Upgrading to a 2013 speed triple soon, only has 3300 miles on it. Test ride was fun but the chain is pretty loose and has some rust specs on it. Hoping it won’t have too many mechanical issues from not being ridden in awhile.

What would be your perfect motorcycle?

Mine would be if Yamaha would make a little bobber Yamaha Bolt type cruiser with an FZ09 motor powering it. Similar to what Honda went for with the Magna but it would be better. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gj6399/what_would_be_your_perfect_motorcycle/?utm_source=ifttt

It does end up shifting every time, but it makes for some unpleasant noises and vibrations.2018 zuma 125 A/T 3k milesAny help would be appreciated via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gjaocz/possible_transmission_problem/?utm_source=ifttt

Always feeling rushed with a sense of urgency

So I'm a reasonably new rider. I have a licensing test in 2 days which will allow me to remove the 'learner' plates if I pass (and I don't see why I wouldn't, but to give you an idea where I'm coming from).I've been feeling like I get going pretty slow when turning at the same time (pulling out from stop sign, etc).So I started observing how long it takes cars, and they take way longer than me - in fact it can be really annoying being behind them. Which then begs the question as to why I feel rushed or that sense of urgency.I'm definitely an overthinker. Since realizing that I've started to just let myself take my time and relax - I think its something that got left over from when I was originally learning (and I had never drove a manual before) and trying to balance everything new. Now I'm a lot smoother in general and relaxed - hell it all started feeling easier once I picked up on this. There is no specific question, just seeing if other people relate to this when they were new and have any other observations akin to this. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gitpn4/always_feeling_rushed_with_a_sense_of_urgency/?utm_source=ifttt

Motorcycle Airbags

I’m a huge advocate of them. I’m wondering if anybody has any stories of going down with one of these on? I have a Helite Turtle 2 for max safety and the Merlin backpack for shorter rides and when I have a passenger. Thankfully haven’t experienced a crash with one on. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/gis3lt/motorcycle_airbags/?utm_source=ifttt

Has Anyone Ever tried Using Sixity Brake Pad

I was looking for replacement brake pads and I saw Sixity seems to be an American Manufacturer for organic brake pads, but I haven’t been able to find any previous posts on here or anywhere about them except their reviews on eBay. Honda Shadows a VTX and sanity

This is probably better posted in r/Cruisers but I'm on r/motorcycles - locked down and wanting to add my cycle story. As I said, I'm just wanting to talk about my motorcycle experiences and hopefully spur on some others to add their cycling memories to help get through this lock down.So here goes. (Green Text this if you prefer)Flash back to the late 70's, a young city-raised desperado without a pot to piss in nor a window to throw it out. Find a two-stroke RD-350 Yamaha for a dollar per CC, buy it with a months gas station pay. Ride that fast little pecker on the highways, byways and even trails.Join the USAF and haul that bike wherever you go, get married and ride it two up without a front brake for 600 miles round trip in the Mojave Desert. Smell the lemons south of Bakersfield.Go overseas for a remote tour and get home only to find out the damned thing has been stolen.Have a son who you lose too early so you buy a Suzuki GS650GLZ and ride solo round trip from L.A. to St. Louis in an attempt to drown yourself in your own mind, don't worry about the wild horses you almost ran into surrounded by an east Texas nighttime fog.Spend 20 plus years in Uncle Sugars Air Force and retire.Have back surgery twice in nine days, be told you'll not walk again so you sell your bike but not after looking at the doctors shoes and say to yourself "You'll walk again and when you do you'll get some of those fancy doctor shoes and a motorcycle".Learn the wheelchair, the walker and the crutches. Don't leave out the cane.Start walking, get some balls and ride a bicycle.Buy the Yamaha twin of the Suzuki, ride it down the road with odors in the air you can't detect when in a car. Feel like you did when you had the RD350. Like you were 23 again.Find out that there's motorcycles for sale online, search what you're looking for and another world opens up.Buy a Honda Aero 750, lie awake in bed every night wondering what streets to ride, what byways to explore. Buy every luggage piece that'll make your next trip more enjoyable and memorable.Skip on down the road several thousand miles and buy a VT1100C, buy some more storage because the miles and trips are getting longer. Sell the 750 Aero to your best friend, your brother, only to watch him dump it 30 miles from the nearest town.Find another VT1100C at a great price, the other half needs to have their own bike, right?Get the Aero back free - one accident is enough. Teach the better half to ride on that wonderful little retro machine. I think I'm good at teaching motorcycle riding skills or so she says. She did great so I'll believe her.Buy a VTX1800RetroI'm not pretending to be a writer and my story was more for myself but if I sparked a memory I'd love to hear yours.BTW, I'm just a simple 60 year old dude from St. Louis with a love of riding the blacktops and having conversations with those I meet along this road we call life.I hope we meet someday. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/girczq/honda_shadows_a_vtx_and_sanity/?utm_source=ifttt

Need some help with electrical diagnostics

Sorry for typos, I'm on mobileI have a 2007 honda shadow aero I'm working on. Currently I'm having a bit if trouble with the turn signalsI'm not sure about on other bikes, but on mine, the signals are always lit, and flash off when you signal, which I quite like. However, currently the power to the right rear seems to somehow be inverted.Currently I'm having a problem where three signals are acting at expected, but the right rear is behaving in a "traditional" manner - normally off and flashing on.What am I missing here? I dont think it's the flasher relay, as I believe that this bike is setup to run from the switch, to the relay and back to the switch for distribution. All of the signals are on one fuse, so it's not that. I have continuity through the wiring between the switch and the connector by the signal. If I swap the signal to the connector for the left side, it works as expected, so it's not the signal itself. The front working normally is what's throwing me off. Is it the switch maybe? Maybe??I'm not 100% clear on if the front and rear run off the same circuit, as theres three wires running to the front signal (why I dont know) but only two to the rear.I can upload a picture of the wiring diagram if that would help. I appreciate the insight as I'm really starting to scratch my head hereCheers via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/giqnuu/need_some_help_with_electrical_diagnostics/?utm_source=ifttt
