Just bought a cardo unit, few questions.

Hello, I just purchased a Cardo Packtalk BOLD, and a set of 45mm JBL Speakers. After the install everything works fine, but the speakers really mash my ears and my helmet (Icon Variant) has no speaker pockets. I could live with that, however going down the road at normal speeds (50 mph) I can barely hear my music good, and not much else besides wind noise. I can turn the unit up, but it just hurts my ears. Is there any way I can fix the audio issue? I am used to wearing in-ear earbuds while I ride, and the sound quality is just no comparison. Would earplugs fix this to any extent?
