Rolling to the front of the line at a stoplight

Always curious what more seasoned riders do in this situation - say you’re riding and come up to a red light with multiple lanes and 5 or more cars stopped at it. Do you just wait your turn at the back or roll to the front? I remember one time deciding to roll up to the front and getting about half way there and the light turned green. I felt a little awkward like I’d just made a big mistake.
