Quiestion about boots with plastic buckles and also womans boots.

I have been advised that the buckles on off-road style boots can be a pain in the ass, come undone, break, and potentially scratch a road bike.What are your experiences with this? Am I better off looking for leather and velcro? Are off road boots that come up to the half shin with a few buckles not good for road biking?Secondly, it's frustrating that a lot of womans boots come with a heel. Is this just how things are? The heel will catch on the peg which I find distracting.
