What are some unwritten (and not necessarily legal) motorcycle parking rules?

I'm back in the motorcycle-owners club after a 10 year hiatus and have relatively limited experience. I was downtown in my city and noticed a bike parked next to a metered spot on the diagonal lines. When I was at the department store, I noticed the same thing.
