Is braking while turning the bike at all a no-no? (ie. to a avoid something?)

A car pulled out in front of me at a fairly slow speed, I braked and turned a little to the right to avoid the car (hit both brakes) and the bike slid down on its right side under me. What could I have done differently? Did braking while attempting to manuver the bike to the right cause this?
