Newbie Question

I’m just now getting into MotoGP so cut me some slack. I wanna know if lap times matter to the placement or scoring in a race? As far as I can tell it’s just there to denote the gap time much like cycling does when you’re watching a bike race. Is this true that the only thing that really matters is what place you finish after the last lap?
