Feeling uneasy about getting a bike but really want one? Talk me into it or out of it

I've always liked motorcycles but never seen myself on one but the last month or so I have been really considering it and involving myself in bikes,safety,gear because if I make the choice to get a bike I want to be as safe as possible. Is it worth the risk is it as bad as people make it out to be?
