I haven’t swung my leg over a motorcycle in years, would the MSF course be a good way to get back into it?

I took the MSF course twice because my dad is an instructor. I fucked up hella bad on my first exam but the second time I scored pretty well in the riding exam.I haven’t ridden since high school and now I’m in my 5th year at college. Would it be difficult to jump straight back in because I’ve been wanting another motorcycle so bad.Would it be smart to start off small? My dad started me on a 97 sportster and I thought that was fine but now I’m leaning towards sports bikes. It’s been a minute and I know I’ll be rusty. Are smaller bikes like say, 250s, the safe route in this situation?
