My first Road Trip

I’m a fairly new rider, I’ve been driving for a few months, still on my permit (no freeways or night driving) but thats it. I live in the bay area. Today I wake up and I check the time, its 5:30. Too early compared to when I get up but after a bathroom break I jokingly think to myself “its early enough to drive to san francisco today”. Then I realize with school starting again soon this is my last carefree weekend. After a shower, breakfast, and wearing my gear, I get up on my bike and I leave for SF on a 50 mile route. Its 7:00 am. The sun isn’t even out yet and I realize soon thats an issue a few miles down the road. I’m wearing jeans and underpants, 2 socks, riding boots, a long sleeve top and my riding jacket, my helmet, and my riding gloves (which are perforated.... I know). My legs are getting cold but I can bear that, my riding jacket is keeping my chest insulated. My feet are being blasted by chilling wind but the boots and two socks are keeping the warmth going. My hands though, they are freezing. This is just a few miles down the road, now here I figure to myself “the sun is about to get out, should warm me up once it does”. Tough luck for me, theres clouds over the eastern sky and the sun is behind them.20 miles later in 40 degrees wind with my hands going numb I pull over finally. I use my exhaust to heat up my hands for warmth, thats when the rest of the cold hits me. My hands are getting warmer now, but the rest of my body lost most of it heat already through my hands. Thats when I realize that I basically can’t do this. Its too damn cold and I’m gonna go into hypothermia if I keep riding. At this point I’ve ridden far enough that riding back home is gonna end me up with hypothermia, and continuing my trip will to. So I’m stuck in the middle of a place I don’t know touching my exhaust for warmth. Thats when I realize, cycle gear! I open the map on my phone and there it is, 3 miles away. I warm my hands up pretty toasty for one last time (lasted till the next stop light lol), and I head there. I walk out of cycle gear with a pair of glove liners, and with my cold ass thankful I bought my gloves one size larger so they fit liners. The liners keep my hands just warm enough. My hands are still getting cold, but they’re warm enough that I can finish the trip! And I do, 10:00 am and I reach twin peaks to see all of San Francisco’s glory! Its beautiful, its chilly, one bathroom is broken and the other has a long line and I have to go. Its everything you can expect it to be! I’m feeling rewarded with my drive here, until I find another problem, my phone is already halfway empty, and I have nothing to charge it with.I stay at the peaks for about 30 minutes, then head out to eat. I park my bike and pay for an hour. At the place I go to I ask the employees to help charge my phone and they do! Pretty cool of them. The place is small and crowded so I try to stall my stay after finishing eating so my phone can charge a little more. After charging myself up and my phone I decide its best to head back since I’m not prepared enough for a trip this long. I get back to my bike, 30 minutes left on the parking meter. I look at my bike, some homeless man left a cardboard with some scribbles on it. My mirrors have been messed with as well. I check the rest of the bike and everything was alright. I’m surprised to see that people will actually mess with your bike when you park it on the street. This was my first time parking in SF for 30 minutes and someone did. Needless to say I’ll be buying a disk lock before I head there again. I start my bike, someone else takes my parking spot, and I start heading back.I miss a few exists in SF, almost reverse wheelie myself braking hard trying to catch one, and almost drive into oncoming traffic for another. Finally I get out of the confusing street jumble that is SF and I start driving back home. A closed road forces me on a detour which leads me taking a different route than the one I use getting to SF. A scenic route. I pass by an amazing lake, and incredible views, a pack of riders pass me by and it felt great riding with them for a short while. At this point I’m really enjoying riding, a little tired but the amazing views and the road give me some energy and smiles.I cover 40 miles of the trip feeling tired but riding alright. The last 10 miles though.... At this point my phone is close to being dead, and I’m trying to get back home as fast as possible without speeding. My body is sore and my muscles are tired. I can finally understand why an iron butt is called that, my back is tired, my fingers are cramped, and so is my left shoulder, my arms are loose. I stop lane splitting because I’m too tired. 5 miles down the road I start to question wether my male nutmegs have turned into the ground stuff you can buy in supermarkets. 1 mile away from home, from here on I know the road so I’m no longer worried about my phone. I just want to park and get off my bike. 2 blocks away from my place my phone goes silent. I reach home, park my bike and finally, stand up with both feet on the ground.I enter my place, take off my gear, store it. Get a bag of snacks, and lay on my bed. I look at my watch. 3:00 pm. I eat an oat biscuit to put some food in me, and then feel my tired body slowly sinking into my mattress. Everything hurts, muscles aches, joints doesn’t want to move, and I have no energy left in me try to move them. With my head on the pillow I drag my body under my covers, then drag the covers over me. I sleep for 4 hours. At the end of it, I’m happy, it was the most exciting thing I’ve done in so long. I did something with an arguable degree of stupidity, got lucky thinking of a solution to get me out of real danger (the cold), had a fun day driving in San Francisco and getting lost. Learned about parking in a big city. Had something new for lunch. Lane splitted in between long rows of traffic which feels great. Saw some amazing views of lakes and woods. Rode with a small pack of riders for two miles. Had a dog bark at me (I’d like to imagine its in admiration and good spirit like everything else a dog does). Had my entire body get exhausted and beaten up. And finally, made it back home feeling safe and satisfied. It was an adventure. Drive safe everyone and enjoy riding !TL;DR Went on my first spontaneous trip to SF in cold weather, that almost got me in danger. I got lost, enjoyed twin peaks, ate something new in SF, saw some amazing views driving back, got back home with a empty phone battery and a beaten tired body, but I loved every moment of the journey.Edit: Some pics I tookhttps://imgur.com/a/2OwfeS5 via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/eqsjjk/my_first_road_trip/?utm_source=ifttt
