Was Mick Doohans’ championship era the weakest in terms of competition?

Let me caveat this question by saying Mick was the guy who I first started following back in the day (circa 93) and was my hero until a certain Italian came along. I just think when Mick was racing against Rainey, Schwantz, Lawson and maybe Gardner, he always came up short - whether down to injury or mechanical issues.

After the early 90’s and the departure of the guys above, it seems Mick didn’t have any real rivals.

What are you’re thoughts?
