I have compiled a small list of recommendations I think is a great start to create safer riders. I might be working with a lawmaker in the future and would love to have feedback.DOT Helmet Laws & Enforcement“Given the availability of false certification labels, law enforcement officials attempting to establish that a novelty helmet user has violated a State helmet use law must present evidence in a hearing that establishes, in the face of a false certification label, that a particular helmet does not meet FMVSS No. 218. This can be a difficult burden. Over the years that novelty helmets have been in use, NHTSA has been contacted many times by police officers and other state enforcement officials that have lost enforcement cases or complained about the costs due to the difficulty with demonstrating that a helmet does not meet the requirements of FMVSS No. 218.” - https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/2015-11756.pdf - page 10I look at this as a customer/manufacturer problem. We need better enforcement from the government to prevent false certification labels. New riders are buying cheap helmets because that is all they can afford, and bad actors are taking advantage.“NHTSA’s Compliance Test Program To help ensure that helmets are properly certified by their manufacturers, NHTSA conducts a compliance test program that tests approximately 40 different makes and models of helmets each year. The helmets are purchased by NHTSA through normal retail channels. Because FMVSS No. 218 requires that helmets be tested under four different environmental conditions, NHTSA purchases four samples of each helmet model. The helmets are then tested by test laboratories under contract with the agency. Currently, testing of a particular model of helmet costs approximately $2,000.” -https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/2015-11756.pdf - page 12I believe the burden should be placed on the manufacturers of these helmets. I believe they should send in the helmets for testing, for free, as it will free up resources for the NHTSA. Once tested, the helmet can be placed onto the market. This would hopefully hurt knock-off manufacturers.Utah Lane Filtering LawCame into effect Tuesday, May 14, 2019. I want this to be a standard across the USA.Speed limit on the road is 45mph or lessNever on freeways ( I believe you should be allowed to do this on freeways)Road must have 2 or more adjacent traffic lanes in the same direction of travel.Basically can’t lane filter on a yellow line.Motorcycles can only lane filter between stopped vehicles.I agree. The main goal here is to reduce injuries and congestion.Motorcycle speed cannot be more than 15mph when filtering.I agree. The main goal is to reduce injuries and congestion. If we travel higher than this, the risk becomes too great and diminishes the purpose in the first place.ABS Standard On All Motorcycles In The USA.The NTSB board voted 5-0 to send its recommendation to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that all motorcycles sold in the United States be equipped as standard with anti-lock brakes.NTSB researchers determined that in 2017, anti-lock brakes were standard on 8.9 percent of U.S. motorcycles and were optional on 13.3 percent.NHTSA is under no obligation to adopt the NTSB's recommendation. - https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ntsb-motorcycle-abs-requirement-nhtsa/“This analysis evaluated the real-world safety benefits of motorcycle ABS while also addressing the potential influence of self-selection by safer riders. Results indicate that all riders may be expected to benefit from ABS technology on their motorcycles. This study also confirms that auto crash risk is a reasonable proxy for a safety profile that may be applied to future research on other optional safety technologies” - https://www-esv.nhtsa.dot.gov/Proceedings/24/files/24ESV-000256.PDFI think it is self-evident that ABS makes a huge difference in “panic braking.” This should be a standard for motorcycles. What do you all think? via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/eb5dgt/federal_motorcycle_recommendations_i_would_love/?utm_source=ifttt
