So THIS Just Rolled Into My Shop

Those of a faint hearted disposition might want to be warned that this might violate the "no gore" rule on the sidebar, there.https://preview.redd.it/j0nhsxauddy31.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c016e58d7d3bf885ce7934e66e79e07af2b011ecA buddy of mine just took possession of the above in trade, which is allegedly a 2016 SSR SR189. (I have not investigated the VIN yet.) Given its condition I was sure it was stolen, but believe it or not, the title was indeed produced. He intends to use it to teach his girlfriend to ride. He asked me what I could do with it. Apparently, "Setting fire to it and pushing it off a cliff, on video, and using the ad revenue to buy a better bike" was not the answer he was looking for.It has a bad case of PDO.https://preview.redd.it/lu893zpwddy31.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0848a6382515f14374cff08adff74cb1769b33e4For instance, the rear. Notice anything... missing? That's right, the entire rear brake is gone. Rotor, caliper, line, pads, even the rotor bolts. Just gone.https://preview.redd.it/1kiqjilyddy31.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7099fdab3d4472c5526770d9d0e4247e22fcc5ebThese are the front brake pads. No, one of them is not L shaped from the factory. I found the outboard pad zip tied to the outside of the caliper, presumably to prevent it from getting lost. I was so flabbergasted by this I forgot to take a picture before I cut the zip tie off. Seriously, the previous owner's mental state baffles me completely.https://preview.redd.it/zbr2y6s0edy31.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d0689cc24207dddde9e119473c0673ee6d3fa3aOf course, the front caliper is in this kind of state. Pistons ground into the rotor with no pad in place for who knows how long. All that crud in the caliper there? Those are melted shavings of the ends of the pistons.https://preview.redd.it/a029kpq1edy31.jpg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46887ee88d97a36ccc0af10082a427dabc4ed0afWiring's a complete rat's nest. Big old mystery ball of electrical tape tucked up under the handlebars. The bike has been hotwired. First up, they key was stuck in the ignition. I got it out with copious amounts of lock lube and some choice cuss words, but it turns out it doesn't matter. Key on, key off, key not even in the cylinder -- it makes no difference. The only way to cut it off is the kill switch. I can't prove it just yet, but I suspect the thing in the foreground is supposed to be a neutral indicator light. The battery, of course, is completely shot. It's also clearly been stored outside. Anything that can rust is rusty, the grips are trashed, levers bent, body fasteners missing all over the place, and there are is a hint that there used to be a chain roller on there but it's nowhere to be found. Also MIA: The entire kickstand, several rivets in the silencer, and one of the heat shield mounts (it's held on with a hose clamp). Every single piece of plastic is cracked.Against all outward appearance, against all logic, expectation, and rationality: It has compression, and it has spark. And if you romp on the kick starter long enough, it runs. I haven't even taken the carb apart yet.I post this as a warning from history. How to I get myself involved in these things? If we're lucky, you might hear from us again in the spring. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/dvlfse/so_this_just_rolled_into_my_shop/?utm_source=ifttt
