Ok guys so I have had my motorcycle license since may and have just been waiting to get a bike. After alot of time and consideration I was planning on the yamaha mt-07. Msrp 7600. Now this is just a quick run down of what I went through some things I noticed and a shoutout to two dealerships.First up is markups... my god. I went to a ridiculous amount of dealerships and found with the msrp of 7600 you can get anywhere from 9000-7000 otd prices. Read what the markups are and always ask questions. 1. Vin etching... still dont know what this is or the point. If a dealer has this on there charges try to pass on it if they will not let this charge drop you might want to find another dealer. 100-400 dollars 2. Setup- this one seems to be in the 200-500 range. This one is totally acceptable since the bike doesnt come together to the store just make sure your not double charged for this somewhere else and some dealers will take this off. 3. Fluids and prep- ok so this is a little different than setup and I have seen two shops have both (one classifying setup as winter prep so it was an extra 400) basically to me setup and fluids seem to fall under the same category so if you see this twice get one knocked off and dont fall for it. A bike doesnt have that large of a gas tank to warrant an extra $200. But for one shop setup was $200 fluids was $50 so I was going to let it slide. Remember these are markups which basically mean alot of it is profit. The guy who set up your bike is getting 60-100 dollars for doing so most of the time and the dealer is getting the rest. 4. Frieght and shipping and handling.... this one to me is kinda stupid but every single dealer has it and its even listed on the manufacturers website. Even getting the best deal imaginable they will still “charge” you for it by undercutting somewhere else because apparently they cant just take this off.Up next is call ahead pricing. After doing the leg work to get to alot of dealers just to be given the run around I decided to do most of the sale on the phone. You learn there are two very different types of saleman at this point. This is where my first shout out goes to DHY motorsports in deptford new jersey. Unfortunately I never received the salesmans name and he never asked mine. He gave me a clear break down of prices with a solid otd price it was very relaxed and very professional. He even listed the color options and then told me about the sales and promotions. If I didnt receive the bike I did this is where I was gonna go Friday even though I have many dealers closer. This is the thing if a dealer will not work with you over the phone or give you information until you come in, do try to avoid them. If they cannot give you a clear otd price over the phone it means there are too many add ons and fees they have to figure out when you get there lol. Check there website first for there stock and get the stock number of the bike you are looking at. When you call set a clear and reasonable otd price and see if they are willing to work with you. Remember otd price is not decided on ur credit score thats your interest rate so dont fall for that bull shit either. And last is my shoutout and experience with Ben from Cross Country BMW of hasbrouck heights and to Dan the owner. The actual sale of my bike. So I was still looking around when I caught a f 750 gs model for a low price because it was a demo model so decided to give it a try since this was originally the bike I wanted just didnt want to spend so much on my first bike. I gave the place a call on monday and talked about the rider safety program bmw does. I didnt know they where not open but the owner still picked up the phone and explained it to me even though he didnt have too which left a good impression. Then today I decided to call up sales and make an offer on the demo model. Heres the thing if you have a number you know you would pay and you are fine buying it that day if they hit that number let them know that and it will put a little more pep in there step to get you where you want for the sales. Ben answered the phone and after talking to him for a bit he said he needed to crunch the number talk to sales manager and he will call me back. Within 15 minutes I got a call saying yes the otd I said was doable so I told him I would see him later that day. When I got there he was very attentive took me to the bike showed me around and everything and right from there I said ok lets go to the paperwork waiting for the “upsells” to start but with no add ons or markups the otd was exactly what we discussed on the phone. He even gave me free shipping of the bike to my house (I live an hour away) and I could not be happier. I know it was a bit more than the yamaha but I am very satisfied with this sale and would totally go to them again. Once again there are many closer more convenient locations but if you truely want a good deal shop around. A couple hundred to a thousand dollars is worth the trip.Hope this helps via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/e2ako2/my_experience_buying_my_first_bike_from_a_dealer/?utm_source=ifttt
