I did a fucking awful job translating the words of Chicho Lorenzo. Enjoy

In this video I’m going to tell you how the retirement of my son, Jorge Lorenzo Guerro, happened at the Valencia Circuit after 18 seasons as an active racer in the World Championship--Accompanied by photos from a press conference by Ezpleta Dorna, the man who directs the company that manages the "World Championship of Motorcycles," held to highlight four important days in a pilot’s life: Their MotoGP debut, the day of their first race, the day of their first World Championship, and the day they announce their withdrawal.

Well that final day has come, and Lorenzo’s words, accompanied by images of his 18 years in MotoGP, from his beginnings with Derbi, the Spanish brand that trusted him when he was only 14 years old and saw him win four victories, a number of important podiums and a first place podium in the 250 class. Then two years with Aprilia, where he managed 17 victories and two world championships. These great results opened the door to reach the official team of Yamaha in MotoGP with fellow teammate Valentino Rossi.

Nine seasons with the japanese brand left us with epic moments; important moments for Lorenzo and for the history of this sport, but there were two races in which Lorenzo showed an incredible capacity for suffering. The first day was when he broke both of his ankles in China, raced and won second place. The second day was at Assen when he had a brutal fall at 200 mph, had collarbone fractures that wouldn’t be operated on until the day before the race in Barcelona, had the operation and felt strong enough to get on the Honda and race the next day, thus confirming his commitment to the sport.

On top of his victories at Yamaha, Jorge also achieved regular victories with the ducati, something that had never been achieved before by the italian brand, and after a very difficult first year where Jorge didn’t understand the bike. Unfortunately his victories came late and ducati had already begun looking for someone else to replace Jorge. Jorge moved onto Honda and as you know the year at honda had been very complicated. Jorge did not understand the bike, had many falls with many injuries, some of them important that lead to his announcing his retirement after 18 seasons in the World Cup.

Of those important in Lorenzo’s career, the first of them is Jiji (sp?), the technical line currently at Ducati. They were his technical team for all his years at Aprilia and Yamaha for no less than 42 victories. Next is Micele Pirro, tester at Ducati. Randy Mamola, one of the best American pilots in history, and Licio Cecchinello, old rival in the 125 years that now directs a satellite team of honda in MotoGP. Linea Gray and the yahama motoGP team. David in the team tower. Brivio the man who is in front of the Suzuki Team. Commentator of the Grand Prizes in the area, ernest riveras. Emilio Alzamora, manager of Marc Marquez. Arturo Villa, head of pre-pressuring years. Roberto, coordinator at team Derbi. Toni Tree, training partner. Hundreds of his friends. Wilco Zeelenberg his track coach at Yamaha. And of course Alberto Puig the sports director at Honda who was the person who personally signed us up to the Repsol HRC team-- he also showed up on Sunday with a special helmet for the occasion, a tribute to chupa chups, one of his first sponsors, a race that was nothing special in terms of results, but was special to meeting the fans and finishing the race. His mother met him at the finish and also so many people and the team, waiting for him to arrive for the last time and say farewell. Farewell to the fans who had lived in the stadiums and were there with him for 18 seasons through triumphs and suffering. Tens of journalists were waiting for him wtih cameras and people who had been important to his career.

In the last moments he would ever be on bike, and In ritual known by all fans, he burned the back tire until he was engulfed in smoke, and in that the story had ended. Lorenzo attended to the journalists who waited their turn for last statements from an active pilot who has marked history within the last decades of the MotoGP. And in the middle of so many adults, two children, Mallorquin pilots, who were wishing to witness Lorenzo came up and took a picture. Two young pilots who wish to do great things in this sport.

In the meantime I took the opportunity to see the changes that he has done to the ergonomics of his seat and also with his gas tank while trying to find himself at ease. In the end he never managed to get here, but did manage to be the best in the brakes.

Lorenzo took some photos with the team for remembrance of the story, and also a very special photo with his mother and me on November 17 in Cheste (sp?). Jorge Lorenzo, retired at 32 years old, which may seem premature but he had been on a motorcycle for 30 years, a long working life and despite having another year of contract he considered that the time had come to hang his helmet and and move on, and I also retired as the father of an active pilot after 32 years of intense work.

I have been very lucky to share with my son the dream that one day he would be world champion, and I would be with him for all of it. And in the end we got this video, so I want to give a special thank you to all those who make motorcycle racing possible, the people who make up the organizations, the competitors, the mothers, the unconditional fans who make it out to the circuits and enjoy this wonderful spectacle that are the motorcycle competitions, to the caretakers of the motorcycles, to those who take care of the pilots, and to the people who tell the world about what goes on in our world. Thanks a lot for everything.
