How important is it to follow your service manual 100%?

I'm relatively new to riding, having bought my first motorcycle only 5 months ago. What I've noticed is that my service manual has quite an intimidating list of stuff that needs to be maintained. Examples are spark plug cleaning, drive chain tightening etc. every 2 months.Even with youtube, I still am not confident that I can do this myself without risking damage to my machine.
