It has been exactly one year since I woke up in a hospital after having my leg rebuilt by a surgeon because of an accident the night prior; and I'm hoping that this post (and linked pictures) will prevent at least one person from making the same mistakes I did.To put it simply, I had been out with a friend and was riding with more recklessness than I should have. I misjudged my speed in a turn, clipped a guard-rail, and high-sided the bike; throwing myself onto the freeway (thankfully with little traffic). While I remember the crash vividly; the rest of the evening went by in a blur of medical personnel, screenings, and anesthesia. I was fortunate enough to have only injured my right leg, but unfortunate enough for the damage to be somewhat severe. I fractured my tibia and femur where they meet at the knee, as well as opened up the front of my leg pretty bad. I spent weeks being able to do almost nothing without assistance of some kind. I had to re-learn how to do everything from standing, to walking, to swinging my leg back over the bike. That wreck taught me a lot about the importance of wearing proper gear. I had a helmet, gloves, boots and a jacket on that day; but I was just wearing a pair of ordinary jeans; so I might as well have just taken both a sledge hammer and a belt sander directly to my knee. The fact that the sole cause of the accident was my own recklessness also made it abundantly clear to me that practicing safe riding skills and developing good habits are paramount to staying out of harms way when out on two wheels. In case you're curious or If you need any more convincing, here is my leg.
