Short version: Yesterday morning I killed an 8 point buck with cost me 3 fractured ribs, a broken collarbone, and wrecked bike. Because of the burden I now place on my family, I'm taking a significantly long break.Long version: I've been riding on the street for 14 years, and grew up in dirt bikes. I've always known the risk and did my best to mitigate it through training, self discipline, and proper gear. However, since getting married 10 years ago, having a child 6 years ago, the risk has become a burden deep down inside. I've found myself riding less and less.Yesterday morning I decided to mount my Speed Triple for my hour commute. It was pitch dark out so I tend to keep my speed lower. I also decided to take the slightly longer scenic route. About 30 minutes in, a buck suddenly appeared in my headlights and I instantly hit it, flying over the bars and landing hard on my shoulder, breaking my collarbone and fracturing some ribs. I tumbled multiple times in the dark pavement. My head hit the pavement at least twice, and my bike hit me as well. Trajectory put me in the oncoming traffic lane. Luckily, no cars were coming. The deer, my bike and I came to a rest on the opposite side of the road. I quickly got up to assess the damage and quickly realized the extent of my injuries. I dialed 911 while I waited for help. Not a single car stopped since they didn't see me as it was still dark. I called my wife while waiting to give her the bad news. The doctor noted how my helmet saved my life, and my gear kept injuries to a minimum. I noted how not having oncoming traffic allowed me to survive.I did a lot of soul searching while getting my CT scans and lying in pain at the hospital. I was very lucky to see my family again. I don't want my little girl growing up without her daddy. This crash gave me the out I was unconsciously looking for. While I love being on 2 wheels, I love my family more. Maybe one day I'll return to do some track riding in a controlled environment, but until then, I'm finished. Keep the shiny side up my brothers! Here's my gear post crash. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/9r684b/i_think_its_time_to_hangup_my_leathers_for_a_while/?utm_source=ifttt
