For those of you that don't know, May is motorcycle safety awareness month. Mine got off to a rather ironic start by getting into a motorcycle crash. I entered an intersection on a yellow light without the distance to stop for the following red. A lady in an SUV (didn't take note of anything more specific) was turning left and used the yellow light to try and clear the intersection. Unfortunately she did so right as I was coming across her path at 35 MPH. I retrospect I should have tried to swerve around her instead of trying to stop but I know I did the right thing by staying on the bike instead of dumping it.The left fork glanced her driver side bumper and the crash protection tore off her whole headlight assembly. I was thrown over the handlebars and tossed another ~20 ft before I landed on the back of my head and right side. My gear did its job and I was able to immediately stand up and walk to the side of the road. My jacket is a little scuffed up but still usable but my helmet will need to be replaced. Her front bumper and left headlight are completely destroyed but the KLR is still in very good condition. Some scuffs on the left fork are the only damage that I know of right now. Hopefully a closer inspection of the frame and front assembly reveals no further damage. Once my post-accident soreness clears up and my replacement helmet arrives I am hoping to be back in the saddle, rain or shine! It is truly a testament to the effort that goes into producing safe riding gear that I am basically completely unharmed. Right now I am trying to obtain traffic camera footage of the accident just in case I need to file a lawsuit and so I can post it here so everyone can learn a little bit from my accident.I'm not really one to preach ATGATT. I follow it, and I highly recommend it, but I generally believe that one can do whatever they want with their life. If that means riding around with no gear, then do what you want. Just know that the feeling of freedom that comes with riding is not diminished by wearing protective gear. via /r/motorcycles https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/8gp6q9/motorcycle_safety_awareness_month_off_to_an/?utm_source=ifttt
