Potentially unpopular opinion

Preface: I'm a Stoner (fan) and now Miller fan owing to where I live, and otherwise just a solid fan of the series and that's about it. Been watching since the start of the Doohan era.

Vinales' win in my view wasn't some fluke. Marquez is obviously the man to beat but he isn't the only person fast on two wheels.

I know that Marquez is more mature than previously, but he is a racer and if he can take a win he will. In my respectful view, Vinales' outclassed Marquez at Assen... Marquez in my view was NOT settling for second, Vinales' beat him fair and square and I don't think Marquez had an answer to Vinales' pace.

Irrespective of my opinion and whether it is correct, this is great for the sport. Hopefully Yamaha and Vinales have found something and continue the trend both mentally and from a race craft point of view, and mechanically from a team and bike perspective.

I don't for a second wish to take away from the phenomenon that is Marc Marquez, but taking the history of Maverick Vinales and Marc Marquez into account, and the weekend as a whole... I think Vinales' beat and outclassed Marc Marquez fair and square and very valuably, showed that Marc is fallible, something which we need reminding of given Marc's dominance, which needs to be proved every now and then, and which in my view was proved on Sunday.

I'm a strong believer that skill plays one part, mental fortitude, funding (read: a good factory team with proper support) development time on a bike, dedication and then a sprinkling of luck gets you to consistent race wins. I'm hoping Vinales' just clicked all those together like Dovi did to get to where he is from his Honda and Tech3 recent history.

With Suzuki hitting convincing race leaders 1 and 2 at Assen for a period which we haven't had for a while, satelite Yamaha up there, Ducati expected podium finishers at the majority of races, and the general level of talent who can vie for the podium, I simply cannot wait for next race in the hope that it's not a Marquez runaway and we see this championship go down to the wire.
