What exactly are we listening to when we watch the race?

So I have a completely pointless, potentially boring question. I just finished watching the last race, and noticed the sound from a race is often continuous even as the camera changes. The only time it seems to change is when they go onboard with someone.

So where do they put the microphones? Does anyone know how they do this? They cant be attached to the cameras, do they just follow the leaders?
