I've been wanting a cafe racer for a long time. I actually don't know shit about bikes or motors, so I was prepared to shell out the dough for a brat bike that someone else built. A buddy of mine finally convinced me that if I built my own, I'd be way more satisfied with the outcome and I'd learn along the way. So, after a lot of searching, I found the perfect bike: a 1981 Hondamatic CM400. I picked it up for $650. The owner said it didn't run but suggested I start with the carburetors. After a day dedicated to figuring out how to get the damn things out and apart, cleaning them, reassembling them, and then replacing a fuse... the bike RAN!Now I'm starting the cosmetic stuff. New seat, new paint job, etc. Any tips for a beginner? It has a small crease in the gas tank that I would like to pop back out but I'm unsure how. I'm using aircraft paint stripper and plan on leaving the tank bare metal with a clearcoat and possibly a matte stripe... still unsure if I should prime the area the matte will lay or if the paint will just stick to the clear finish. I'm going to paint the frame, motor, exhaust, etc. a black satin but leave some areas their original chrome for the contrast. My main concern is minimizing all that "junk" in the frame... most classic cafes are very minimalist with a distinct triangle of empty space under the seat. That is where my battery/fuses/airbox sits... tips? Tricks? Suggestions? via /r/CafeRacers https://www.reddit.com/r/CafeRacers/comments/9degxw/my_first_bike_build/?utm_source=ifttt
