Working on my first bike, needing advice on how to do the wiring

I just got my first bike, a 1980 suzuki gn400. None of the lights currently work, and I think I probably just need to rewire the whole thing from scratch. I've never done this before, but I've been looking at a few things. Either a wiring harness or one of the electrical control boxes. The boxes look like you can just plug all the components into them and they take care of the rest. Is this true? If so, can anyone suggest a good one? Or am I better off using a wiring harness?
