Looking for opinions on going to Assen

Hi guys! I'm an American visiting my family in Germany. I could drive the three and a half hours to go see the races in Assen but I would miss some time with family. I doubt I'll ever be this close again (in the states I'm too far from COTA). What I'm interested to know, is how good is the experience. I normally don't like crowds, but I think I could get past that. I'm guessing it is impossible to get into the pits, so does the general admission area have a good view? Is it a positive vibe, or a bunch of drunk hooligans? I know there is a lot of personal choice I need to make, I'm just hoping to get a better picture of what it is like.Thanks!!
