A lesson learned from buying a bad used bike, now I have to tear down the GS500 engine

I bought a used 2001 GS500 from a friend of a friend for pretty cheap several weeks back. I figured I had the money to spend, wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle, and didn't mind fixing any minor issues on my own and doing all the basic maintenance. Well, bike has had issues ever since I have had it. Runs like a piece of crap, can barely get it started. Kept thinking it was a carburetor issue. Cleaned them several times and rejetted. I never wanted to admit it could be a problem with the engine, because I know that engine issues are on a whole other level.Well, over the course of the past few days I have a learned some hard truths. I really should have done more research and inspection when I went to buy the bike. Turns out that although it is a 2001 frame, it has a 1995 engine on it (Big mistake on my part for not realizing this). Spark plugs look all fouled, and looking down in the spark plug holes it looks all gunky and black. I realized I have to do a compression test, and so I did this morning and it reads awfully low at 90/80 psi. But, I'm not giving up on fixing this bike. Today is gonna mark the start of my teardown of the engine. I'm currently in college and studying mechanical engineering, so in a way I sorta feel obligated to do this, as well as make up for my dumb mistake of not taking enough concern to check the bike when I first bought it. Plus I've got the time on my hands this summer, especially this Memorial Day Weekend. Wish me luck, and let me know if there is anything in particular I should be doing and looking for as I tear down the engine and try to fix the cylinders and valves.
